Sri Varahadeva @ Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math - Nabadwip Dham, India

Under the watchful eye of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur

Here's the best photo I (Paramseva dasa) could take with a 300mm lens (Pujarji wouldn't let me get closer) of Narayana (high asana) and Varahadeva (low asana to our right) from the Sri Caitanya Sarasvat Math in Nabadwip. Varahadeva is a principle deity there and is very unique. He must be fed sweet-rice every single day or he creates all kinds of disturbances. He was donated to Srila Sridhara Maharaja by one family who couldn't handle His transcendental anger. They gave Him saying, "We think that only you are fit to worship Him."

The following article is taken from a Gaudiya Math Nabadwip News Bulletin Newsletter 21st February 1998 on the InterNet http://www.scsmath.com/bulletin/17.html

Sri Varaha-dvadasi in Kaikhali

As guests at the home of respected Srimati Maya Didi of Kaikhali, Calcutta, Srila Govinda Maharaj and entourage engaged in Kirtan and discourse on the morning of Sri Varaha-dvadasi. After receiving light Maha-Prasadam, the sadhus and family of Srimati Maya Didi proceeded the short distance to our Kaikhali Sree Chaitanya Saraswata Krishnanushilana Sangha to continue the program before the exalted presiding Deity: Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Discourses followed a grand Kirtan. Here the assembled devotees, guests and visitors heard of the special relevance to us of Sri Varahadev's Appearance. The focus of our devotees is Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math on the Koladwip island of the nine islands of Nabadwip. Lord Varahadev is the presiding Deity of Koladwip, and the devotees heard that Lord Varahadev by His own wish came to our Math in Nabadwip in the form of a Salagram Sila. Due to the critical strictness and scripturally enjoined reverence to be observed in the worship of a Deity of that nature, so much disturbance had occurred wherever this Salagram Sila had been. Finally the Vaishnavas who tried to look after Him petitioned Srila Guru Maharaj (HH B.R. Sridhar Maharaj) that he, as a pure devotee, was likely to be the only one who could worship this Salagram Sila without disturbances coming.

It was only after the Sila eventually came to the Math that His identity became known. Srila Sridhar Maharaj asked Srila Govinda Maharaj to carefully study the markings on the Sila and refer to the relevant Scriptures to ascertain in which specific form of Narayan is manifest in the Sila. Srila Govinda Maharaj soon concluded that He had all the symptoms of a Varaha Salagram Sila, and this was presently confirmed by other exalted Vaishnavas.

Srila Sridhar Maharaj and Srila Govinda Maharaj found out that the particular nature of the Thakur was that He liked sweet rice. This was arranged from that day, and continues till this, and there have never again been any disturbances that could be attributed to any impropriety in His worship.

After chanting the glories of Varahadev and our Sri Guru-varga, the Bhoga-arati was performed. Everyone was pleased to see Mahaprabhu looking so well cared for, and presently to see the grand feast spread out before Him. This feast, and indeed the whole day's program, was sponsored with devotion by Srimati Maya Didi.
